Holy Cross Stages Its Own Dancing With the Stars Competition

Nine students with little or no dance experience paired with seasoned dance “pros” from the Ballroom Dance Team to compete in Holy Cross’ version of “Dancing with the Stars.” Judges C. Dan Earley ’12, former team captain, left, Joanne Highland, center, and Pat Connelly, one of the head professional dance instructors for the Ballroom Dance team, prepare to watch the pairs take the floor in the Hogan Ballroom.
Kallen Bakas ’12 and Samantha Hullihen ’13 of the Ballroom Dance Team performed one of the showcase dances at Holy Cross Dancing with the Stars in the Hogan Ballroom.
Lauren Dy ’13, the “pro” dancer, and Chris Tota ’13, the novice, really got into character as they danced a tango to “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch.”
Gaby Betances ’14, the novice, and Harry Crimi ’15, the “pro” dancer, performed a rumba to “Ring My Bells” by Enrique Iglesias.
Allie Gitto ’14, the veteran ballroom dancer, and Andrew Cecchetti ’13, the novice, won the competition with their cha-cha to Karmin’s “Brokenhearted.” The event was free, but donations were accepted at the door. At the end of the evening, the winning pair was able to donate the proceeds to the charity of their choice. Gitto and Cecchetti selected the Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund. “I was very proud of Allie and her partner, their routine was really good,” says two-time winner Hullihen ’13. “I was very pleased to pass on the title to someone with such a great routine. I was quite impressed with the overall quality and difficulty of this year’s routines across the board.”
