Site managers hold up signs with their site names in front of hundreds of volunteers gathered behind Worcester’s City Hall at Working for Worcester’s kick off rally. Working for Worcester, in its fifth year of operation, has raised more than $500,000 in capital, invested more than $1 million in the city in resources and services, mobilized more than 5,000 volunteers and renovated more than 100 sites across the city.

Students, faculty and staff lined up at tables on the Hoval last Friday, April 28 to taste samples from local restaurants. The Taste of Worcester event was hosted by Student Programs for Urban Development (SPUD) community organizers. Vendors included El Patron, Loving Hut, Tom’s International Deli, Hacienda Don Juan’s and Cafe Reyes. Also in attendance were 35 refugee transition students from Worcester Public Schools. The event was free of charge with download of Foodler, a restaurant ordering app, with optional donations to support refugee resettlement in Worcester.

Jeans hang in the middle of the Hogan Oval to commemorate “Denim Day,” a nationally celebrated event that serves as a symbol of protest against sexual violence during Sexual Violence Awareness Month. Members of the Holy Cross community wore jeans across campus in solidarity and donated up to $5 to be given to Aids Project Worcester, a nonprofit organization in Worcester. The event was organized by the Sexual Assault, Facts, Education and Response (SAFER) committee on campus.

Crowned the winner of the fifth annual Shark Tank competition, Paul Wiley ’20 holds a check for $12,000 won with the pitch for his company PW Industries, which specializes in custom handcrafted executive products and jewelry for the promotional product industry.

In addition to the monetary prize given to the winner of the competition, sponsored by the Ciocca Office of Entrepreneurial Studies and the Prebusiness Program, Wiley will also be paired with an alumni mentor and given year-long memberships to Worcester Clean Tech Incubator, Venture Forum and Worcester Chamber of Commerce.

Sean Teebagy ’17, shows off why he loves Holy Cross during the ‘I LOVE HC’ fundraising challenge on Feb. 14. The 24-hour challenge engaged 6,111 donors who contributed a total of $1,848,787, shattering the previous donor record set at a liberal arts college. Some of the most impressive statistics of the day include: 61 percent of all donations came from the classes of the 1990s through the 2010s; 49.4 percent of seniors made donations, making the Class of 2017 the top-giving class; and 100 percent of senior-athletes participated in the challenge. Elizabeth Wambui ’09, director of advancement at the Nativity School of Worcester, tells students to be innovate, to embrace change, and to step into discomfort during her keynote address at the 10th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership Luncheon, sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Education. Students, faculty, and staff gather in the Cantor Art Gallery for the opening reception of “Last Frontier: The Subjectivity of Territory,” engaging with the thought-provoking work of 10 Latin American artists who explore the concept of borders through photography, sculpture, and video. The exhibition, curated by V. Nicolás Koralsky, the director for the College’s study abroad program in Buenos Aires, will run through April 14.
