Children of Uganda crowd around microscopes donated by the Holy Cross biology department. Members of the department collaborated with Jacki Creed Ebone ’86, president of The Giving Creed, a non­profit combining philanthropy and scientific equipment sales, who facilitated the “gift in kind” to Generis International. Generis International seeks to mitigate the negative impact of poverty on orphans and vulnerable children in Africa. As part of their work, they build educational capacity, including setting up science labs in rural areas.

Students celebrate Purple Pride Day, an annual event honoring all Crusaders, on the first floor of the Hogan Campus Center. Members of the Purple Key Society decorate the campus in the early hours of the day, sponsor events to promote school spirit, and offer giveaways.

Local high school students compete in the 44th annual Classics Day, hosted by the Holy Cross classics department. The day features a series of events relating to both the study and experience of ancient Roman culture and is designed to familiarize students with the classics department, its faculty, and current students. More than 500 students from 22 area high schools attended this year’s event and participated in various challenges and contests, including a manuscripts challenge, costume contest, trivia, and an art contest.

Students take a break to meet and pet therapy dogs during the Counseling Outreach Peer Educators (COPE) week of programming promoting healthy coping and mental health. During the week, students had the opportunity to relax with therapy dogs and cats, take Zumba classes, learn more during movie screenings and participate in Paint Night, complete with mocktails.

Holy Cross faculty, students, and librarians volunteered as judges for the 5th and 6th grade Canterbury Street Magnet School’s Science Fair. Among the judges were Barbara Merolli, science librarian; Alicia Hansen, head of research and instruction services; De-Ping Yang, professor of physics; Ann Sheehy, associate professor of biology; Timothy Roach, associate professor of physics; Rob Bellin, professor and chair of biology; and students Lauren Riley, Jeeva Jacob, and Jeff Bourgeois.

Holy Cross students and staff participate in a pilgrimage for the Holy Year of Mercy. Joined by students from Anna Maria College, Assumption College and Worcester State University, community members began with a prayer on the steps of St. Joseph Memorial Chapel on the Holy Cross campus and walked the 2.4 miles to the “Holy Door” at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Worcester. Participants traveled with canned goods for donation to the Cathedral and upon arrival participated in reconciliation services and confession after walking through the Holy Doors.

Acclaimed actor Roger Guenveur Smith performs his “Rodney King” monologue in Seelos Theatre. The performance combines history, poetry, and tragedy as Smith tackles the odyssey of Rodney King, a construction worker darkly deemed “the first reality TV star” when his violent beating at the hands of police in 1991 was caught on film. Smith’s monologue won a 2015 Bessie Award for Outstanding Production. 

Attendees engage in a discussion with Smith and Michael West, associate professor of history at the College, following the performance. Smith also took part in a “Meet the Artist” reception in the Seelos Theatre lobby.

On Feb. 20, Holy Cross students met to discuss genocide prevention and an emerging international policy norm known as the “Responsibility to Protect” (R2P), as part of the annual Presidential Scholars Public Policy Symposium on campus.

The annual symposium provides an intellectually challenging forum for Presidential Scholars to explore compelling issues of public policy with their peers. Previously the scholars have confronted policy challenges related to global warming, U.S. immigration, global health issues, and the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake.
