Holy Cross Community Celebrates Annual HarvestFest

Students celebrate autumn during the annual Fall HarvestFest Dinner in Kimball Dining Hall. Students selected from pork roast with caramelized apples, homemade cranberry sauce, roasted butternut squash, Vermont cheddar mashed potatoes and an apple cider rotisserie chicken. They also indulged their sweet tooth with caramel and chocolate apples, pumpkin spice cupcakes and other fall favorites handcrafted by Holy Cross Dining Services.

Margery Eagan Moderates Panel on Pope Francis’ Address to Congress

Boroughs, S.J. welcomes Holy Cross community members to “Breaking Down Pope Francis’ Address To Congress,” a panel discussion moderated by Crux spirituality columnist and WGBH radio host Margery Eagan. Participants included, from left, Rev. David Dae An Rynick, a Zen Buddhist priest at the Boundless Way Temple in Worcester; Frank Kartheiser ’88, co-founder of the Mustard Seed and founder of and lead organizer at Worcester Interfaith; Caner Dagli, associate professor of religious studies and an expert in Islamic studies; ; Sara Mitchell, geologist and director of environmental studies; Daniel Klinghard, associate professor of political science; and Emily Muldoon ’16, who recently returned from a semester in El Salvador. Students Take Advantage of Annual Career Fair

First-year student Emily Castillo introduces herself to company representatives during the annual Fall Career Fair hosted by the Center for Career Development. More than 60 employer representatives descended on the Hogan Ballroom to speak with students about internships and employment. Holy Cross graduates returned to campus representing their employers in fields such as biotechnology, education, financial services, insurance, law enforcement, media and marketing and software and technology. Students took advantage of the opportunity to discuss their resumes and a LinkedIn photo booth.

Students Attend ‘Fresh Check Day’ Wellness Fair

Students attend the first annual “Fresh Check Day” wellness fair on the Hogan Courtyard. The event, sponsored by Counseling Outreach Peer Educators (COPE), is the signature program of The Jordan Porco Foundation. JPF works closely with colleges, including Holy Cross, to bring awareness of mental health resources and coping strategies to college campuses. It is a celebratory event with interactive booths, free food, and prizes.

Holy Cross Student Gives Keynote Speech at National Order of the Arrow Conference

Donald Stephens ’18, an economics and political science major from Shavertown, Penn., gives the keynote address at the 2015 National Order of the Arrow conference. Stephens addressed 15,000 attendees at the conference, marking the 100th anniversary of the organization’s founding. In addition to providing leadership and assisting to execute the event, Stephens participated in various training sessions and programs during the weeklong conference.

Stephens is one of 170,000 selected, out of 3 million Boy Scouts of America members, to the Order of the Arrow. Based on his proven track record of experience in the outdoors and service to others, Stephens was named national vice chief of the Order of the Arrow, the second highest role within the organization. At Holy Cross, he volunteers in the admissions outreach program, campus ministry and is a student worker in the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College.

Holy Cross Community Members ‘Flash Swarm’ Campus

Students and faculty from Holy Cross’ CreateLab course partake in a “flash swarm” in the Swords Atrium of the Integrated Science Complex. Alongside visiting artists-in-residence, Troika Ranch, an internationally renowned ensemble that fuses dance, theatre and technology, the Holy Cross community is exploring the relationship between Gravity and Grace: The Intersection of Art and Science, this year’s Arts Transcending Borders theme. Collaborating with theatre, CreateLab classes and the Arts Transcending Borders initiative, Troika Ranch will integrate live performance with cutting edge interactive technology at Holy Cross throughout the year.

Hundreds Attend Community Service Information Night

Lines of students wait to enter the Hogan Campus Center Ballroom for Student Programs for Urban Development (SPUD) information night. SPUD is the largest student organization on campus, involving approximately 600 student volunteers who answer the Holy Cross call to be “men and women for and with others” in the surrounding Worcester community.

Students had the opportunity to browse and speak with representatives from more than 40 public service programs. From serving meals and working at food pantries, to tutoring children and visiting elders in nursing facilities, students build relationships with those in the local communities.

Food Truck Fridays Kicks Off Semester

At the conclusion of inflatable laser tag, students line up on the Hogan Courtyard for ‘Food Truck Friday’. Brought to campus by Perfect Parties, the Campus Activities Board hosted an inflatable laser tag competition during Holy Cross’ traditional Welcome Week. Following the activities, the Office of Student Involvement ’s Food Truck Friday kicked off the semester with Sweet Tomatoes Pizza Truck. ‘Food Truck Fridays’ is free to Holy Cross students all September long with upcoming food trucks, The Dog Father and Dylan and Pete’s Ice Cream.

Drumming Circle Targets Global Diversity Awareness

Brazilian percussionist Marcus Santos leads CreateLab students in an Afro-Brazilian drumming circle on the Hogan Courtyard. This innovative drumming project promotes music as an educational resource, entertainment and as a catalyst for social change targeting global diversity awareness.
