Holy Cross Hosts Higher Education Recruitment Consortium

Rev. Philip Boroughs, S.J., president of the College, welcomes guests to the Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (HERC)  Conference in the Hogan Campus Center Ballroom. The annual conference brings together professionals from around New England to promote equity and excellence in higher education recruitment worldwide. HERC advances the ability of member institutions to recruit and retain the most diverse and talented workforce and to assist dual-career couples.

The day’s schedule included a keynote address by Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski, III, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, breakout sessions and networking among conference attendees.

Boroughs, S.J. welcomes Holy Cross community members to “Breaking Down Pope Francis’ Address To Congress,” a panel discussion moderated by Crux spirituality columnist and WGBH radio host Margery Eagan. Participants included, from left, Rev. David Dae An Rynick, a Zen Buddhist priest at the Boundless Way Temple in Worcester; Frank Kartheiser ’88, co-founder of the Mustard Seed and founder of and lead organizer at Worcester Interfaith; Caner Dagli, associate professor of religious studies and an expert in Islamic studies; ; Sara Mitchell, geologist and director of environmental studies; Daniel Klinghard, associate professor of political science; and Emily Muldoon ’16, who recently returned from a semester in El Salvador. Fr. Boroughs Welcomes Teachers to Himalayan Institute

Rev. Philip L. Boroughs, S.J., president of Holy Cross, welcomes teachers to “Literatures, Religions and Arts of the Himalayan Region!,” a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute held at Holy Cross. The annual Himalayan Institute held by Todd Lewis, professor of religious studies, is open to K-12 educators who work in a variety of subject fields. The four week course is a comprehensive interdisciplinary overview of the remarkable Himalayan region defined by the world’s highest mountain range.

Boroughs, S.J., joined Congressman Jim McGovern (MA-02) as well as, state and local leaders to celebrate the advertisement of Phase 1 of the Blackstone Heritage Corridor Visitor Center in Worcester. This unique destination for Worcester community members, visitors and the National Heritage Corridor will offer many recreational, historical, cultural, and geographic attractions while celebrating the lush landscape of the Blackstone River Valley.

Students Express Gratitude to Numerous Campus Offices for Their Service

Members of the Holy Cross Student Government Association gathered to thank Dining Services, Facilities, Health Services, Public Safety and Residence Life and Housing for their dedication and commitment to students during the winter season that brought record amounts of snow.

The Ordination of Virginia Coakley

Members of the Holy Cross community gathered to celebrate the Service for the Ordination of Virginia Coakley, assistant chaplain and director of Protestant and ALANA Ministries, to the Ministry of Word and Sacrament by the Presbytery of Boston.

Seniors Pause to Reflect Before Beginning Their Final Semester at Holy Cross

On the eve of her final semester, Roobvia Bernadin ’15, a premed music major from Boston, performs before classmates at Senior Convocation in St. Joseph Memorial Chapel. The tradition offers seniors an opportunity to reflect on their journey thus far and to consider how best to use their remaining time at the College to shape the life they want to lead beyond the Hill.

College Holds Memorial Ceremony for Rev. Joseph T. O’Callahan, S.J.

On Tuesday, March 18, the College community marked the 50th anniversary of the passing of Rev. Joseph  T. O’Callahan, S.J., a Navy chaplain and a professor of math and physics at the College, with a wreath-laying ceremony at his grave. Fr. O’Callahan was the first Jesuit to be commissioned as a Navy chaplain in World War II and the first chaplain to receive the Medal of Honor. Rev. Philip Boroughs, S.J., president of the College, and Paul Covino, chaplain, spoke at the ceremony, while Navy Captain Thomas G. Kelley ’60, a Medal of Honor recipient, read the citation that was issued with Fr. O’Callahan’s medal. Read more about the anniversary on the Holy Cross website.

Fr. Boroughs Participates in Catholic College Presidents Forum on Emmanuel Radio

Rev. Philip Boroughs, S.J., president of Holy Cross,  joined the presidents of Anna Maria College and Assumption College on Emmanuel Radio’s inaugural radio program called “Catholic College Presidents Forum.” The three Catholic college presidents discussed higher education in the 21st century, the current challenges that Catholic colleges face, and hopes for each school in the future. The new program is scheduled to air on Emmanuel Radio 1230 AM, on September 27.
