Mary Kate Vanecko ’17 pitches her startup idea to alumni during the Entrepreneurship Deep Dive. Held over winter break, the five-day workshop transforms a student’s idea into a fully developed business plan. Students are encouraged to then participate in the spring Shark Tank Competition for up to $12,000 in prize money.

J.D. “Dave” Power III ’53, founder of J.D. Power and Associates, holds the 2016 Alexander Hamilton Award, and is flanked by Richard Grahn, president of the National Coast Guard Museum Association on the left, and Admiral Robert Papp, 24th Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard on the right. Power, who served as an officer aboard the Coast Guard icebreaker EASTWIND during the mid-1950s, was recognized for his efforts and success in establishing the National Coast Guard Museum, which is being constructed on the historic downtown waterfront in New London, Conn.
Over pizza in Stein Hall, students in the economics class Latin American Economic Development put on a pseudo Pecha Kucha night titled “20×20 by 17x17x17.” Pecha Kucha is a concise presentation format in which each speaker brings 20 slides and speaks about a topic, and each slide is shown for only 20 seconds. “We added 17X17X17 — 17 students, 17 countries, 17 issues of Latin American Economic Development,” says Robert Reinauer, visiting instructor in economics. Invitees included students and faculty members from the economics and Latin American and Latino Studies departments.

Emma Carlone ’19 gives a presentation titled “NAFTA: Its Impacts on the Industrial Sector of the Mexican Economy.”

Helen Freear-Papio, director of the Foreign Language Assistants Program and lecturer in Spanish, center, conducted a two-day bilingual theater workshop at the University of Murcia in Spain while she was there over the Thanksgiving break. Freear-Papio involved two of her former students from Holy Cross, Kyler Canastra ‘14, far left, and Brendan Medeiros ’11, second from right, who live in Madrid and love the theater. María Cantuel, a well-known Spanish actor and Medeiros’ girlfriend, second from left, was the artistic director of the performance. At far right is Diana de Paco Serrano, dramatist, cultural coordinator and professor of classics at the University of Murcia, who invited Freear-Papio to conduct the workshop.
At the end of the workshop, the participants staged a series of short bilingual monologues around the themes of fear and anger. Here Freear-Papio, Medeiros, and Canastra work with some of the participants to make the texts bilingual.
Cantuel leads the group in theatrical warm-up activities. The workshop was such a great success, Freear-Papio says they have been invited back to the University of Murcia and will be doing a follow-up workshop over spring break.
Throughout the fall semester, members of the College of the Holy Cross community have been inspired by Stickwork, an environmental sculpture made from local saplings. Created by renowned artist, Patrick Dougherty, with the help of campus and local community volunteers,, the structure stands on Linden Lane.
Above, students, faculty and staff embraced the environmental sculpture and gathered for a drum circle lead by Brazilian percussionist, Marcus Santos.
On #ArtsMattersDay Uni2Act, the Spanish-English bilingual student theatre troupe teamed with members of dance ensemble and a student choir to perform a piece called “Árboles | Trees.”
As Ryan Barclay ’08 and his wife Elisabeth posed for their wedding photos in New York’s Central Park, they were approached by a familiar stranger: actor Tom Hanks.
The couple were taking photos with their wedding party near a common path for runners when one runner stopped and approached the happy couple.
“Hey, I’m Tom Hanks,” he said to an awestruck wedding party, before happily posing for photos with the couple. In a tweet shortly thereafter, Hanks shared a selfie and well wishes to the newlyweds.

Students attend the second annual “Fresh Check Day” wellness fair in the Hogan Ballroom, featuring interactive booths, free food, and prizes. The event, sponsored by Counseling Outreach Peer Educators (COPE), is the signature program of The Jordan Porco Foundation (JPF). JPF works closely with colleges, such as Holy Cross, to bring awareness of mental health resources and coping strategies to college campuses.
