At noon today, members of the Holy Cross community gathered for a brief prayer service at the edge of the Hogan Courtyard, where eight large crosses representing the martyrs of El Salvador, are on display. The service was sponsored by the student group Pax Christi which strives to create a world that reflects the Peace of Christ by exploring, articulating and bearing witness to the call of Christian nonviolence. “As we gather to honor their witness, we must acknoweledge the victims of violence who cry out to us today from Paris, Beirut, Syria, Israel, Palestine, Mexico, and from all corners of the Earth,” said Marty Kelly, associate director of the Chaplains’ Office, in opening remarks.

Co-chairs Brendan Healey ’16 and Abigail Oliver ’17, along with faculty advisor, Professor Sarah Luria welcome Pulitzer prize-winning couple, Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn to the 50th annual Hannify-Howland Memorial Lecture. The lecture, which recognizes individuals who have distinguished themselves in the realm of public service in honor of Edward Hanify, a member of the graduating class of 1904, and Weston Howland, addressed challenges facing America today.
The husband-and-wife duo addressed Holy Cross community members with a talk entitled, “Why Students Should Care About the World—& Change It”. Using their own experiences as journalists, Kristof and WuDunn inspired students to shape and contribute to a meaningful global environment.
At the close of the lecture students and guests engaged with the speakers during a question and answer session, followed by a book signing in the Hogan ballroom.

Students were invited to follow the picture clue that led to Café Babel, located in Stein Hall, to find and win a pair of tickets. Inspired by James Cameron’s AVATAR and produced by Cirque du Soleil, “TORUK – The First Flight” is coming to Worcester December 11-13. Holy Cross community members can continue the scavenger hunt this week by following the DCU Center on social media or purchase tickets at the DCU Center box office.
