Holy Cross Prepares for Advent Season

Facilities department staff member, Arthur Allard hangs an Advent wreath in St. Joseph Memorial Chapel. The College will celebrate the Advent season with various events including an annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony, Advent Festival of Lessons and Carols, and weekly mass.

Student Group Holds Prayer for Jesuit Martyrs of El Salvador

At noon today, members of the Holy Cross community gathered for a brief prayer service at the edge of the Hogan Courtyard, where eight large crosses representing the martyrs of El Salvador, are on display. The service was sponsored by the student group Pax Christi which strives to create a world that reflects the Peace of Christ by exploring, articulating and bearing witness to the call of Christian nonviolence. “As we gather to honor their witness, we must acknoweledge the victims of violence who cry out to us today from Paris, Beirut, Syria, Israel, Palestine, Mexico, and from all corners of the Earth,” said Marty Kelly, associate director of the Chaplains’ Office, in opening remarks.

Holy Cross Hosts Higher Education Recruitment Consortium

Rev. Philip Boroughs, S.J., president of the College, welcomes guests to the Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (HERC)  Conference in the Hogan Campus Center Ballroom. The annual conference brings together professionals from around New England to promote equity and excellence in higher education recruitment worldwide. HERC advances the ability of member institutions to recruit and retain the most diverse and talented workforce and to assist dual-career couples.

The day’s schedule included a keynote address by Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski, III, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, breakout sessions and networking among conference attendees.

Pulitzer Prize-Winning Couple Delivers 50th Annual Hanify-Howland Memorial Lecture

Co-chairs Brendan Healey ’16 and Abigail Oliver ’17, along with faculty advisor, Professor Sarah Luria welcome Pulitzer prize-winning couple, Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn to the 50th annual Hannify-Howland Memorial Lecture. The lecture, which recognizes individuals who have distinguished themselves in the realm of public service in honor of Edward Hanify, a member of the graduating class of 1904, and Weston Howland, addressed challenges facing America today.

The husband-and-wife duo addressed Holy Cross community members with a talk entitled, “Why Students Should Care About the World—& Change It”. Using their own experiences as journalists, Kristof and WuDunn inspired students to shape and contribute to a meaningful global environment.

At the close of the lecture students and guests engaged with the speakers during a question and answer session, followed by a book signing in the Hogan ballroom.

Worcester’s DCU Center Conducts Scavenger Hunt at Holy Cross

Promoted by social media, Holy Cross students participated in an on campus scavenger hunt for tickets to the DCU Center performance of “TORUK – The First Flight”. Students were invited to follow the picture clue that led to Café Babel, located in Stein Hall, to find and win a pair of tickets. Inspired by James Cameron’s AVATAR and produced by Cirque du Soleil, “TORUK – The First Flight” is coming to Worcester December 11-13. Holy Cross community members can continue the scavenger hunt this week by following the DCU Center on social media or purchase tickets at the DCU Center box office.
