December 20th, 2013 by smorriss

WreathsAcrossAmerica2_GroupCR

On Dec. 14, volunteers from the Holy Cross Club of the Capital Region joined Boston College alumni at Arlington National Cemetery to place wreaths at the graves of deceased Crusaders and Eagles.  This joint event, part of a national “Wreaths Across America” effort, aimed to honor our fallen heroes. Through the on-campus research of Rev. Robert Keane, S.J., director of Special Projects in Mission, 15 Holy Cross alumni were identified as being interred at Arlington. If you know of alumni who are buried at the National Cemetery, please contact the Alumni Relations Office at alumni@holycross.edu or 508-793-2483.

Crews Work All Night to Clear Snow on Campus

December 18th, 2013 by

Physical Plant crews worked throughout the night to clear the more than half a foot of snow on campus that fell the day before. The snow ended at approximately 9 p.m., but most of the white stuff had been cleared by the time employees arrived the next morning.

Alumni Ties

When Caroline Marks ’16, below, ventured out into the snow-covered lanes of Mount St. James during the early February snowstorm with classmate Dylan Vasconcellos ’16, she couldn’t resist snapping a few shots and sharing them with her Latin teacher at Kellenberg Memorial High School in Uniondale, N.Y., Dave Bonagura ’03. (“Mr. B,” after all, is a fellow Crusader.) Bonagura then sent them to Holy Cross Magazine editor Suzanne Morrissey. “We love getting snapshots from alumni and students,” Morrissey says. “It’s fun to see the buildings, details and spaces they love the most and want to capture in images.” Do you have photos of campus you’d like to share? Email Suzanne at hcmag@holycross.edu. (High resolution shots only, please.)

City of Worcester Sponsors College Skate Night on New Outdoor Ice Rink

January 26th, 2013 by

From left, Brittany Geoffroy ’13, left, Christopher Robert ’13 and Michaela Johnson ’13 showed their purple pride in front of City Hall for College Skate Night on the new Worcester Common Oval. The evening of free ice skating for students was arranged through the City of Worcester as a way to thank the colleges who helped to sponsor the opening of the rink this season. (The rink is open for public skating on weekends through the end of February from 1 to 6 p.m.)

John Morton ’15 laced up for College Skate Night, which brought out about 150 students from all the Worcester campuses for a clear but bitterly cold evening on the ice.

Holy Cross is one of the community sponsors of The Worcester Common Oval — a 12,000-square-foot rink (that’s 4,000 square feet larger than the size of the Rink at Rockefeller Center) that offers skate rentals and concessions. “The rink is yet another success story for our Downtown,” says City Manager Michael V. O’Brien. “I am grateful to those in the community who continue to recognize the potential of our great city and step up time and time again to make things happen.”

January 3rd, 2013 by

David Gyscek, visiting assistant professor in visual arts, asked students in his Photography I course to take photos of the Holy Cross campus. Students in the course, which is offered every semester, learn about exposure controls, camera operation, and rudimentary film developing printing. Here is a sampling.
