Students Embark on Holy Cross for Chamber Music Institute

Brazilian percussionist Marcus Santos leads a lively and challenging drumming workshop with participants in the 2016 Chamber Music Institute. The Institute, now in its third consecutive year, provides a week long residential session of chamber music immersion, in which students play along with faculty in small ensembles and are offered engaging workshops including drumming with Marcus Santos, Alexander Technique with Tommy Thompson and a string masterclass and conducting workshop with violinist, conductor and Professor at Indiana University, Joseph Swensen.

Children of Uganda crowd around microscopes donated by the Holy Cross biology department. Members of the department collaborated with Jacki Creed Ebone ’86, president of The Giving Creed, a non­profit combining philanthropy and scientific equipment sales, who facilitated the “gift in kind” to Generis International. Generis International seeks to mitigate the negative impact of poverty on orphans and vulnerable children in Africa. As part of their work, they build educational capacity, including setting up science labs in rural areas.

Campus Events Educate Community During Sexual Assault Awareness Month

In a series of events, community members welcomed guest lecturers, raised awareness, and engaged in dialogue during sexual assault awareness month. Observed in April, the annual campaign raises public awareness about sexual assault and educates communities and individuals on how to prevent sexual violence.

Byron Hurt, award-winning documentary filmmaker, published writer, anti-sexist activist, and lecturer, speaks with members of the community May 3 in Seelos Theatre on sexual harassment, gender-based violence and hazing. Since 1993, Hurt has been using his craft, his voice, and his writings to broaden and deepen how people think about gender, race, sex, violence, music, and visual media. As an activist, he has served as a gender violence prevention educator.  Hurt served as associate director of the first gender violence prevention program in the United States Marine Corps.

Members of the community make a social statement on April 27 by signing and wearing jeans as a visible means of protest against misconceptions that surround sexual assault on Denim Day. Denim Day is an internationally recognized campaign to prevent sexual violence through education and public awareness. Monetary contributions raised during the day support Abby’s House, a shelter for women and children survivors in Worcester.

Relationship Peer Educators, a student-led group present a screening of “Escalation,” an award-winning short film designed to educate viewers on the warning signs of relationship violence. After the screening on April 27 , facilitators had an informative discussion to help raise awareness of relationship violence, and empower students as bystanders.

Students Celebrate Annual Purple Pride Day

Students celebrate Purple Pride Day, an annual event honoring all Crusaders, on the first floor of the Hogan Campus Center. Members of the Purple Key Society decorate the campus in the early hours of the day, sponsor events to promote school spirit, and offer giveaways.

Local High School Students Compete in Annual Classics Day

Local high school students compete in the 44th annual Classics Day, hosted by the Holy Cross classics department. The day features a series of events relating to both the study and experience of ancient Roman culture and is designed to familiarize students with the classics department, its faculty, and current students. More than 500 students from 22 area high schools attended this year’s event and participated in various challenges and contests, including a manuscripts challenge, costume contest, trivia, and an art contest.
