Chris Matthews ’67 Delivers Talk at Holy Cross, Receives Key to City

Chris Matthews ’67, host of MSNBC’s “Hardball with Chris Matthews” and NBC’s “The Chris Matthews Show,” delivers a talk on his new book “Jack Kennedy: Elusive Hero” before a packed audience in the Hogan Campus Center Ballroom at Holy Cross.


During a reception held in his honor, Matthews signs a copy of his book for James Powers, professor emeritus of history. Powers was Matthews’ history professor when Matthews was a student at Holy Cross.


Also during the reception, Konnie Lukes, Worcester city councilor, presented Matthews with a key to the city.


Scores of students, faculty, staff, and members of the Worcester area wait to have Matthews sign copies of his book in the Hogan Ballroom Lounge following the talk.

Holy Cross Community Offers Helping Hand

Rev. Philip Boroughs, S.J., president of Holy Cross, helps rehabilitate Cookson Park near the College campus during Holy Cross Cares Day.


Fr. Boroughs was joined by approximately 50 Holy Cross students, above, and College Hill neighbors at the site.


A total of 300 students, faculty and staff participated in the 15th annual day of service.

Hoodie Rally Held for Trayvon Martin

Student-Run Brother to Brother Committee Honors Women

Charlotte Wise, who works in Kimball Dining Hall, and Mable Millner, assistant dean and director of multicultural education, were recognized at the third annual Women’s Appreciation Banquet celebrating Women’s History Month in the Loyola Ballroom. The event, sponsored by the Brother to Brother committee, is held to recognize the many roles that women play in the Holy Cross community and their vital importance. Ambassador Harry K. Thomas Jr. ’78 Visits Holy Cross

Harry K. Thomas ’78, U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines, met with students, faculty and staff at Holy Cross during a two-day visit to Holy Cross. During a reception in the Stein faculty lounge, Thomas, who has worked in the State Department for more than two decades, spoke to students about pursuing a career in Foreign Service.


Students in attendance included Fulbright fellowship and Boren Scholarship finalists, Asian Studies students, and students interested in international affairs and government service.

Warm Temperatures Draw Students Outdoors

Students took advantage of warm temperatures in Worcester, enjoying lunch and studying in the newly designed courtyard behind the Hogan Campus Center. Temperatures are expected to be in the 70s much of the week.

College Democrats and College Republicans Join Forces During Bipartisan Week

Norah Marino ’12 and Edward Carey ’14, representing the College Democrats and College Republicans, respectively, man a table on the first floor of the Hogan Campus Center during Bipartisan Week. The student political organizations were collecting nonperishable food and sanitary items that will be shipped overseas to American troops. The student groups also offered a venue for students to write the president, a Republican presidential candidate, or a state representative expressing their opinions or support.

Holy Cross Celebrates Pi Day

The math club and math and computer science department celebrated National Pi Day (March 14) by writing out the mathematical constant pi (π) on the sidewalk from the Hogan Campus Center to Hanselman Hall. A pie eating contest was also held in the Swords Hall math lounge. The pies were baked by professors in the math department.

Clock Next to O’Kane Hall Undergoes Renovation

The stately clock outside of O’Kane Hall was recently renovated. It now uses a GPS receiver to display accurate time, which means it won’t need to be manually adjusted for daylight saving time.
