Washington Semester Students Meet Clarence Thomas

Students in the Washington Semester Program at the College had the unique opportunity to speak with Holy Cross alumnus Clarence Thomas ’71, associate justice of the United States. Thomas talked to the students about  his Holy Cross education and his career path that led him to a seat on the Supreme Court. Thomas also offered insight about what  students can expect to encounter in the professional workforce as they start to think about their future after Holy Cross.

Acapella Co-Founders Return for Anniversary Surprise

Ted and Valerie Lombardi ’01 return to Holy Cross to celebrate their 10-year wedding anniversary with Fools on the Hill, Holy Cross’ only co-ed acapella group, which they co-founded in 1998. After dining in Worcester, Ted and Valerie returned to Mount St. James for an acapella performance, with a few surprises.

The couple watched in admiration as Fools on the Hill performed. To Valerie’s surprise, they began singing Amy Winehouse’s, “Valerie” in her honor. That was not the only surprise Ted had arranged however.

During the performance Ted joined current students and began singing Walk the Moon’s “Shut Up and Dance,” Valerie’s favorite song.

At the conclusion of the performance Valerie and Ted were embraced by current students and shared their story of founding Fools on the Hill and life after Holy Cross with current members and the audience.

Students Take Advantage of Annual Career Fair

First-year student Emily Castillo introduces herself to company representatives during the annual Fall Career Fair hosted by the Center for Career Development. More than 60 employer representatives descended on the Hogan Ballroom to speak with students about internships and employment. Holy Cross graduates returned to campus representing their employers in fields such as biotechnology, education, financial services, insurance, law enforcement, media and marketing and software and technology. Students took advantage of the opportunity to discuss their resumes and a LinkedIn photo booth.

Holy Cross Celebrates Purple Pride Day

Students on campus celebrate the annual Holy Cross Purple Pride Day. Members of the Purple Key Society decorated the campus in the early hours, sponsored events throughout the day to promote school spirit, and offered giveaways in the Hogan Campus Center.

The celebration capped off with live music on the Hogan Courtyard by Holy Cross student band, Karate in the Garage, and food trucks serving frozen hoagies, pizza, and kettle corn.

Holy Cross Past, Present and Future Gather in Los Angeles

Ann McDermott ’79, director of admissions at Holy Cross, poses with an accepted student and his family during the Bob Cousy Award reception in Los Angeles. In celebration of Crusaders past, present and future, admitted students, alumni and guests attended a special reception in downtown Los Angeles. Together, they connected with classmates and friends, learned about what is new and exciting on campus and shared their Holy Cross experiences.

Guests also gathered to watch the presentation of the Bob Cousy Award sponsored by Holy Cross during the first-ever College Basketball Awards Show on ESPN2. The award, named for Holy Cross and Boston Celtics great Bob Cousy ’50, is awarded to college basketball’s top point guard, along with additional awards presented by some of basketball’s all-time great players.

Classics Alumnus and President-Elect of American Medical Association Visits Campus

Steven J. Stack ’94, president-elect of the American Medical Association, returned to Holy Cross to discuss the value of a liberal arts education with the campus community. A classics major at Holy Cross, Stack said, “In medicine, my classical liberal arts education illuminates the soul behind the science; it keeps me forever mindful that science exists in service to humanity and that care of the entire person is at the heart of the healing arts.”

Students Raise $30,000 for Pediatric AIDS Foundation

Approximately 150 members of the Holy Cross community danced the night away in the Hogan Campus Center Ballroom at the annual dance marathon  hosted by Holy Cross Dance Marathon. Together, students, staff and alumni raised $30,755.60 for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.

Holy Cross Students Attend March for Life Rally

Twenty-two students from the College of the Holy Cross traveled to Washington, D.C., to participate in the 2015 March for Life, the annual pro-life rally protesting abortion. Accompanied by Rev. James Hayes, S.J.,  associate chaplain for mission, students attended the “Life is Very Good” conference at George Mason University and the Jesuit Mass and Rally for Life at St. Aloysius Church. For the past 14 years Holy Cross students have participated in the March for Life.
