Clint Jackman ’16, center, represents the College of the Holy Cross in the third annual Mr. Worcester Pageant. Hosted by the Working for Worcester project and the Worcester Student Government Association, the event brings together college students and residents from the community to help raise money for the citywide Working for Worcester project.

In addition to Holy Cross’ Jackman (left), contestants from three area colleges participated in the event; Dan Page ’16 represented Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Bobby Costanza ’16 from Worcester State University and 2016 winner Brian Belleville ’18 of Assumption College. Students competed in three rounds of competition: talent, interview and formalwear. Local celebrities Walter Bird, editor of Worcester Magazine; Mayor Joseph Petty; Maureen Binienda, principal of South High Community School; and City Councilor Kate Toomey judged the contestants.

Students, faculty and staff joined Jamie Hoag, left, director of government and community relations, for a conversation with U.S. Rep James P. McGovern. During the discussion Congressman McGovern applauded the White House’s announcement that President Barack Obama will travel to Cuba next month. Following his discussion McGovern yielded questions from campus community members.

Campus community members view artifacts at the Black History 101 Mobile Museum display in the Hogan Campus Center. The display of more than 5,000 rare treasures is an innovative traveling table top exhibit depicting Black memorabilia spanning slavery to hip hop.

Sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Education, Africana Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies and Multicultural Peer Educators, the mobile museum artifacts represent items from the categories of slavery, Jim Crow era, music, sports, the Civil Rights and Black Power era, and popular culture.

On Jan. 30, students, staff and alumni at the College of the Holy Cross danced the night away in the Hogan Campus Center Ballroom and raised $33,787 for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation at the annual dance marathon hosted by Holy Cross Dance Marathon (HCDM). Participants danced from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m., to the theme “Ignite the Night.” Actress Fatima Ptacek, the voice of Nickelodeon’s “Dora the Explorer” and an ambassador of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, flew in for the event.  She also blogged about the dance marathon for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation’s website.

Holy Cross community members gather to discuss Tavis Smiley’s “Death of a King,” which focuses on the final year of Dr. King’s life. In observation of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion hosted a campuswide book read to engage with Dr. King’s legacy on an intellectual level and to explore how it still resonates today.

More than 125 students, faculty and staff read and discussed the book. In addition to discussion sessions, the book also served as the theme for the ninth annual Martin Luther King Jr. Luncheon.

College of the Holy Cross students, Ryan Kingsley ’17 (black Shirt) of North Attleboro and Sean Teebagy ’17 (grey shirt) of Shrewsbury have started “Engage. Educate. Empower.” Both raised $1,000 to purchase, pack, and deliver 48 backpacks to elementary school students at Pernet Family Health Service’s after school program in Worcester on February 2, 2016. Charter TV-3 was on hand to cover the event. The program’s future plans include raising $5,000 by the fall of 2016 to provide 500 backpack bundles to Worcester public elementary schools.

Donna Wrenn, director of employee relations, delivers remarks during a farewell reception in her honor in the Hogan Campus Center Ballroom. Hundreds showed up to honor Wrenn for her unparalleled devotion to Holy Cross. She served 55 years of loyal and distinguished service under six different presidents, from Rev. Raymond J. Swords, S.J., to Rev. Philip L. Boroughs, S.J.

Fr. Boroughs and members of the Office of Human Resources noted Wrenn’s extraordinary commitment to the mission of Holy Cross and unwavering attention to the welfare of those in the Holy Cross Community.

During the reception, Worcester mayor Joseph M. Petty presented Wrenn with a key to the city.

Holy Cross community members gather in Rehm Library for the 10th annual Non-Profit Careers Conference. The conference introduces students considering careers in non-profit and community based organizations, activism, public service, and social change.

The program is taught by Holy Cross alumni, faculty and staff working within a non-profit or public service setting at the international, national, regional, and local levels. Sessions include an introduction to Vocation and Discernment, the business side of non-profits, and networking events.

In addition to lectures, Stephanie Yuhl, director of Montserrat program and professor of history, ran an interactive workshop on public speaking and listening with substance. With assistance from various Holy Cross community members, students benefited from small group discussions, and individualized attention.
