Advent Festival of Lessons and Carols Offers Many Festive Scenes

A holiday tradition since 1978, the Office of the College Chaplains and the College Choir at Holy Cross host an annual Festival of Lessons and Carols for Advent in St. Joseph Chapel.

Affirmative Action ‘Fishbowl’ Discussion in Rehm Library Draws Large Crowd

Scores of students, faculty and staff attend a “fishbowl” discussion on affirmative action in the Rehm Library. The discussion was preceded by a talk titled “The Supreme Court and Affirmative Action” last month.

Former and Current Military Alumni Connect at O’Callahan Society Dinner

Midshipman 2/C Calvin Joewono ’14, of Berkeley, Calif., and his date Maya Nicole Welch ’14 enjoying the annual O’Callahan Society Dinner in the Hogan Campus Center Ballroom. (The O’Callahan Society, named for Holy Cross professor Rev. Joseph T. O’Callahan, S.J., the first Navy chaplain to be awarded the Medal of Honor, encourages and cultivates the traditions associated with the Jesuit, liberal arts education of military officers.) “The dinner was a wonderful experience to connect with former and current military alumni. This year we had the opportunity to commemorate the Special Warfare community, and it was a great experience to talk with SEALS,” Joewono said.

During Bonelli’s speech to about 300 guests in Hogan Ballroom, he discussed the combat and non-combat duties of the Navy SEALs, as well as the care given to returning SEALs and their families.

‘Today’ Show Segment Serves as Poignant Tribute to Fr. Brooks

“Today” show correspondent Craig Melvin, right, interviews Rev. John E. Brooks, S.J., in the Mary Chapel at Holy Cross on April 17. The segment, which focused on the book “Fraternity,” the story of Fr. Brooks’ efforts to recruit African-American students to campus in the late 1960s, aired on July 4 and can be viewed online. It was the last television interview for Fr. Brooks, who died July 2.

Student-Run Brother to Brother Committee Honors Women

Charlotte Wise, who works in Kimball Dining Hall, and Mable Millner, assistant dean and director of multicultural education, were recognized at the third annual Women’s Appreciation Banquet celebrating Women’s History Month in the Loyola Ballroom. The event, sponsored by the Brother to Brother committee, is held to recognize the many roles that women play in the Holy Cross community and their vital importance. Holy Cross Community Discusses Martin Luther King Jr.’s Legacy

Students, faculty and staff took part in a community discussion about how and why Martin Luther King was more than his “I Have a Dream” speech. The discussion was part of a series of events on Black History Month sponsored by the Black Student Union, a student organization that promotes unity among the black community at Holy Cross.

Fr. Boroughs Keynote Speaker at Martin Luther King Jr. Luncheon

Rev. Philip Boroughs, S.J., president, gives the keynote address at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Luncheon. The event was part of “Aptissimi: The Leadership Conference,” which invites student leaders to explore, develop and articulate their personal leadership styles, and one of a number of annual events sponsored by the “Hate: Not Here!” anti-bias committee. Aptissimi comes from a Jesuit philosophy of developing “as many as possible of the very best.”

Exhibit in Dinand Library Corresponds With Release of ‘Fraternity’

An exhibit in the Main Reading Room of Dinand Library showcases news clippings, photographs, and other material from the tumultuous late 1960s when a group of African-American students were recruited to Holy Cross under former president Rev. John E. Brooks, S.J., ’49. The exhibit corresponds with the release of “Fraternity” by Diane Brady which chronicles the stories of their time at Holy Cross. The material in the exhibit was culled from the library’s archives.
