Holy Cross Students Conduct Sleep Education Program for Elementary School Children

About a dozen Holy Cross students donning pajamas and slippers visited Vernon Hill Elementary School to educate children about the benefits of sleep. Gabriela Velazquez ’12 and Julie Turpin ’11 teach a group of children how to prepare for a good night’s sleep through healthy eating.


Sarah Schwartz ’11, left, and Christina Kyriakos ’11, who founded the program, explain the importance of a regular bedtime routine using the mnemonic READY: Relax before bedtime, Eat a Healthy snack, Always get ready for bed at 8, Did I wash and brush?, and Yes! It’s bedtime.


Invited guest Worcester Mayor Joseph C. O’Brien hands out sleeping bags and sleeping kits, containing bedtime essentials such toothbrushes and socks.

Men’s Ice Hockey Raises $800 for Cancer Charity

The second annual “Pink the Rink” benefit game, sponsored by the Holy Cross men’s ice hockey team, brought in more than $800 for Pink Revolution, a local charity that supports women suffering from breast cancer at UMass Memorial Hospital. About 100 Holy Cross Students Take Part in Blood Drive

Jackie Esperti ’12 donates blood as part of a blood drive hosted by Holy Cross’ Purple Key Society and the American Red Cross. From 2 to 8 p.m., about 100 Holy Cross students dropped by the Hogan Campus Center Ballroom to donate blood for those in need. All the donors received a free American Red Cross water bottle. “Purple Key Society is interested in giving back to the community, so we host three blood drives per year,” said Jen McGill ’12, a member of Purple Key Society.

Relay for Life Raises $2,000 for American Cancer Society

Hundreds of Holy Cross students, faculty, and staff participated in a student-organized 24-hour walkathon that raised more than $2,000 for the American Cancer Society. The money will go directly to cancer research. For the full 24 hours, there was at least one participant walking. In addition, 20 to 30 participants spent the night on the track.

Holy Cross Raises $12K in Walk to Cure Cancer

More than 400 members of the Holy Cross community participated in the 2010 Walk to Cure Cancer at UMass Medical School. Coupled with the College’s institutional contribution, participants raised more than $12,000 for cancer research.
