On June 14, members of the Holy Cross football team helped set up Worcester’s Day of Play. Held at Elm Park, the annual event is designed to engage children (ages 3 to 10) in various forms of “play,” and to highlight the importance of playing by offering a vast range of activities for kids—everything from building rockets to performing in a play. Holy Cross student, Caroline McCabe ’15, was also at the event, having interned with Day of Play for the summer.

Galician bagpiper, pianist, and composer Cristina Pato has been named visiting artist-in residence at the College of the Holy Cross. A member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road, Pato’s residency is part of the launch of “Arts Transcending Borders” (ATB@HC), a new initiative designed to infuse the fine and performing arts in students’ academic lives and create new opportunities throughout the curriculum and the community by transcending cultural, geographic and disciplinary boundaries. Pato kicked off ATB@HC with a performance, accompanied by her band the “Migrations,” at the College’s Academic Conference yesterday to a packed house in the Hogan Campus Center Ballroom.

On Saturday, March 29, 270 students, faculty and staff took part in the 17th annual Holy Cross Cares Day. Led by co-chairs Yarlennys Villaman ’14 and Lisa Hua ’14, volunteers could be found at sites throughout the city of Worcester, performing service activities that ranged from raking and painting to filling boxed lunches.

Th Minority Education Professional Network aims to create a welcoming environment for minority professionals in Worcester’s colleges, universities and public schools. Rob Jones, associate director of multicultural education at Holy Cross, and Jacqueline Peterson, the College’s dean of students and vice president for student affairs, serve on the group’s steering committee, and hosted its networking reception in the Hogan Campus Center on Feb. 26. Worcester’s public school superintendent, Melinda Boone, served as the keynote speaker. Jones, shown here with Boone; Charise Wilson, an admissions counselor at Becker College; and Dean Peterson, commented on the networking event: “What a pleasure to network with the many education professionals of color in the Worcester Community!”

On Dec. 11, members of the Worcester Fire Department Dive Rescue Team were at the Hart Center pool practicing the skills they might use in real-life scenarios, including evidence recovery, escaping from entanglement, and providing oxygen to a victim trapped underwater. The 16 divers in the fire department work in teams of four, and must perform a minimum of six open water dives and one pool dive each year as training.

A diver in the diving well follows a guide line, used when searching for victims or evidence in open water to maintain a consistent search path.

In October, Nativity School of Worcester hosted a black tie gala at Worcester’s Mechanics Hall (bathed in Crusader purple, which is also the signature hue of Nativity) to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the school’s opening (and to benefit the school’s ongoing programs to educate young men from Worcester’s most at-risk neighborhoods in the Jesuit tradition). The celebration sold out with 450 attendees who enjoyed cocktails, dinner, dancing, and, of course, a 10th  birthday cake.  “We were all thrilled that so many people came to help celebrate a school that was just a dream ten years ago,” says Patrick T. Maloney ’02, the school’s director of advancement. Maloney is just one of many Holy Cross alumni and student volunteers who work at Nativity, which has a strong relationship with the College.

Two men from the Holy Cross family who laid the foundation for the Nativity School 10 years ago, and continue to champion it today: Charles “Chick” Weiss, director of grants, foundation and corporate giving for Holy Cross and Nativity Worcester board member and former president of the College, Rev. Michael C. McFarland, S.J.

Spoiler alert: This young man, an 8th grader at Nativity, will be the subject of a “day in the life” feature in the Winter 2014 issue of Holy Cross Magazine, hitting mailboxes in mid-December.

Rev. Philip Boroughs, S.J., president of Holy Cross,  joined the presidents of Anna Maria College and Assumption College on Emmanuel Radio’s inaugural radio program called “Catholic College Presidents Forum.” The three Catholic college presidents discussed higher education in the 21st century, the current challenges that Catholic colleges face, and hopes for each school in the future. The new program is scheduled to air on Emmanuel Radio 1230 AM, on September 27.

Over the years, hundreds if not thousands of Worcester-area children have been paired with Holy Cross students through Big Brothers/Big Sisters. The “Bigs” have fun adventures and get togethers with their “Littles” each week, and in the spring, they let loose at the annual Field Day in (where else?) the Fieldhouse.
