Departments Go Up Against Each Other in Annual Trivia Competition

Teams comprised of one faculty member and one student face off in a trivia-style contest competition for prizes and pride during Battle of the Departments, an annual trivia competition, in the Hogan Campus Center Ballroom. Timothy Austin, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the College, and Michael Barone ’11, director of academic concerns for the Student Government Association, hosted the event.

Holy Cross Students Conduct Sleep Education Program for Elementary School Children

About a dozen Holy Cross students donning pajamas and slippers visited Vernon Hill Elementary School to educate children about the benefits of sleep. Gabriela Velazquez ’12 and Julie Turpin ’11 teach a group of children how to prepare for a good night’s sleep through healthy eating.


Sarah Schwartz ’11, left, and Christina Kyriakos ’11, who founded the program, explain the importance of a regular bedtime routine using the mnemonic READY: Relax before bedtime, Eat a Healthy snack, Always get ready for bed at 8, Did I wash and brush?, and Yes! It’s bedtime.


Invited guest Worcester Mayor Joseph C. O’Brien hands out sleeping bags and sleeping kits, containing bedtime essentials such toothbrushes and socks.

Memorial Service Honors Visual Arts Professor

The College Choir performs in the Brooks Concert Hall during a memorial concert and celebration for Joanna E. (Jody) Ziegler, a longtime faculty member in the visual arts department who passed away last November.  Prior to the event, a meet and greet was held in the Cantor Art Gallery. A reception followed in the Hogan Campus Center Ballroom.

English Professor Receives Parnassus Award for Scholarly Journal

Maurice Géracht, co-editor of the scholarly journal Interfaces, holds the Parnassus Award for Significant Editorial Achievement at the Modern Language Association Convention in Los Angeles on Jan. 8. The award is given by the Council of Editors of Learned Journals, an allied organization of the Modern Language Association. Relay for Life Raises $2,000 for American Cancer Society

Hundreds of Holy Cross students, faculty, and staff participated in a student-organized 24-hour walkathon that raised more than $2,000 for the American Cancer Society. The money will go directly to cancer research. For the full 24 hours, there was at least one participant walking. In addition, 20 to 30 participants spent the night on the track.

Four Faculty Members Receive Swords Medals for 25 Years of Service to the College

Timothy R. Austin, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the College, delivers remarks before Rev. Michael C. McFarland, S.J., president, hands three faculty members with a Raymond J. Swords, S.J., Faculty Medal. The medal honors members of the faculty who have served Holy Cross for 25 years or more.

Kim McElaney, who had worked in the Chaplains’ Office for 25 years, was posthumously awarded a Swords Medal. Fr. McFarland presents her husband, Tim Cox, with the honor. Dean Austin is seen in the background.

Ecology Class Climbs Mount Eisenhower

Biology Professor Robert Bertin’s General Ecology class is seen in the alpine zone atop the 4,780 foot Mount Eisenhower in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, with Mount Washington (highest point in New England) at the rear left. The climb was a class field trip to examine changes in vegetation with altitude. The flag was planted by a group of hikers dubbed Flags on the 48, which memorializes the victims of 9/11 each year by flying an American flag on each of the 48 4,000+ foot peaks in New Hampshire for the day.
