Sun Boxes Make Noise on Hogan Courtyard

Artist Craig Colorusso stands in the middle of his temporary sound installation “Sun Boxes” in the Hogan Courtyard.


The exhibit is comprised of 20 speakers operating independently, each powered by solar panels. The speakers emit recorded guitar notes in loops of different lengths.

Goodwill volunteers man the donation truck in the Hogan Campus Center parking lot.

The College teamed up with Goodwill to host a donation drive on campus in honor of Earth Day. Thanks to the generosity of the campus community, more than 1300 pounds of clothing and household items were collected.

Chris Matthews ’67 Delivers Talk at Holy Cross, Receives Key to City

Chris Matthews ’67, host of MSNBC’s “Hardball with Chris Matthews” and NBC’s “The Chris Matthews Show,” delivers a talk on his new book “Jack Kennedy: Elusive Hero” before a packed audience in the Hogan Campus Center Ballroom at Holy Cross.


During a reception held in his honor, Matthews signs a copy of his book for James Powers, professor emeritus of history. Powers was Matthews’ history professor when Matthews was a student at Holy Cross.


Also during the reception, Konnie Lukes, Worcester city councilor, presented Matthews with a key to the city.


Scores of students, faculty, staff, and members of the Worcester area wait to have Matthews sign copies of his book in the Hogan Ballroom Lounge following the talk.

Hoodie Rally Held for Trayvon Martin

In the Hogan Campus Courtyard, students wear hoodies at a speak out to show their support for the life of Trayvon Martin and his family. The event was sponsored by the “Hate: Not Here!” and Brother to Brother committees.

College Democrats and College Republicans Join Forces During Bipartisan Week

Norah Marino ’12 and Edward Carey ’14, representing the College Democrats and College Republicans, respectively, man a table on the first floor of the Hogan Campus Center during Bipartisan Week. The student political organizations were collecting nonperishable food and sanitary items that will be shipped overseas to American troops. The student groups also offered a venue for students to write the president, a Republican presidential candidate, or a state representative expressing their opinions or support.

Holy Cross Celebrates Pi Day

The math club and math and computer science department celebrated National Pi Day (March 14) by writing out the mathematical constant pi (π) on the sidewalk from the Hogan Campus Center to Hanselman Hall. A pie eating contest was also held in the Swords Hall math lounge. The pies were baked by professors in the math department.

Author Gives Talk on Constant Presence of Technology and Its Effect on Society

A crowded Hogan Ballroom awaits to hear from MIT Professor Sherry Turkle, who gave a talk based on her new book, “Alone Together: Why we expect more from technology and less from each other.”

As a professor, author, researcher, and licensed clinical psychologist, Turkle spoke on the social implications of technology, a topic she has studied for the last 30 years. In light of the author’s discussion and as part of the Montserrat program, all first-year students will take part in a technology-free day on Feb. 17.

After the talk, Turkle met with students and signed copies of her book, which explores the complex relationships people have with technology in our digital age.

Students Raise $23,860 for AIDS Research in Dance Marathon

Students participating in a 12-hour dance marathon from 9 p.m. Jan. 28 to 9 a.m. Jan. 29 in the Hogan Campus Center Ballroom raised $23,860.08 for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. The number, which is expected to grow since donations are still coming in, exceeded organizers’ expectations. Participants were required to raise a minimum of $100, with the goal for the marathon set at $10,000. “We had a total of 138 dancers staying the full 12 hours of the dance marathon plus another 60 or so entering and exiting throughout the night,” says Caroline Cataldo ’12, one of the event organizers.

Fr. Boroughs Keynote Speaker at Martin Luther King Jr. Luncheon

Rev. Philip Boroughs, S.J., president, gives the keynote address at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Luncheon. The event was part of “Aptissimi: The Leadership Conference,” which invites student leaders to explore, develop and articulate their personal leadership styles, and one of a number of annual events sponsored by the “Hate: Not Here!” anti-bias committee. Aptissimi comes from a Jesuit philosophy of developing “as many as possible of the very best.”
